Domain

With all the things associated with internet, it is hard to fully understand all the terms used. This page tries to deal with some :-

What is a Domain name?

This site is associated with a domain name I registered through GoDaddy.com, namely geoffmclane.com, for about ten bucks per year. You can go to a 'whois' server, and get my registration details ...

Sites like - http://dzones.com/faq.htm#1 - give more clues and details ... and the FAQ http://supportpages.net/domainfaq.html is directly on domains ... and http://www.icann.org/tlds/ which explains 'Top-Level Domains (gTLDs)' ... labels separated by dots,

Then there are TLD Extensions, sort of a country code that can be added, like ... domain.com.au, for Australia ... and it appears this type of registration costs up to ten times more ... try http://www.iana.org/cctld/cctld-whois.htm for a great list ... I saw a number like 240 ...

And there other parts, like the new .biz, .per, .info. As the icann site advises, in the 1980s, seven gTLDs (.com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and .org) were created. Domain names may be registered in three of these (.com, .net, and .org) without restriction; the other four have limited purposes.

Over the next twelve years, various discussions occurred concerning additional gTLDs, leading to the selection in November 2000 of seven new TLDs for introduction. These were introduced in 2001 and 2002. Four of the new TLDs (.biz, .info, .name, and .pro) are unsponsored. The other three new TLDs (.aero, .coop, and .museum) are sponsored.

As can be seen from http://www.icann.org/tlds/tld-applications-lodged-02oct00.htm just about everything imaginable has been applied for ... there is .insurance, .jazz, .zone, etc ... hundreds in addition to the seven .biz, .info, etc. above ...

Another page view of all the gTLDs, try http://www.norid.no/domenenavnbaser/domreg.html ... and some information on .name can be had at http://www.nic.name/ ...

The dzones site, http://dzones.com/network.htm , down near bottom has/had a great map of the MCI/UUNET global network ... repeated here ...
